With the weekend fast approaching, make sure your home is safe while you are away enjoying time with friends and family. These tips and tricks can help keep your home protected whether you are away on vacation, or out doing day-to-day activities.
1. Post a “Beware of Dog” sign outside even if you don’t have a dog.
2. Landscape around your home, be sure to keep the bushes near your windows trimmed back to prevent hiding places.
3. Install sensor lighting outside as well as leaving outdoor lights on at night.
4. Store your valuables in a locked safe.
5. Install an alarm system or post an alarm company sign in your yard.
6. Put your inside lights on a timer so it always appears that someone is home
7. Keep your curtains drawn at night to deter others from having an easy view of the inside your house.
8. Do not hide any keys outside of your home.
9. Make sure your sliding doors have an auxiliary lock so that they can’t come off of their track.
10. Use deadbolt on your exterior doors.
11. Keep your windows locked when you are not home.
12. If planning a vacation- hire a reliable house sitter to watch over your home.
13. Have a peephole on your front door so you can see who is there without opening the door.
14. Avoid leaving your GPS in your car, a thief can easily break in and press the “home” button, giving them easy access to your house. Try saving your “home” address as a local gas station or grocery store.
15. Some police stations will drive by your home on occasion if you alert them you are going out of town.
